Who’d of thought!
Did you know that your office shredder needs to meet minimum security level standards for data protection? No? Then read on my friend. Afterwards you can get in touch with me to get advice and guidance on this and many other “didn’t think about that” items.
Whilst its not set in law what security level of shredding you have to use, under the new EU GDPR, it is law that an organisation puts in place all technical and organisational controls to ensure data breaches don’t occur.
You will find it useful to consider the following DIN Security levels when making a decision on what level you should shred paper documents. It may also assist you in choosing the right shredding device.
DIN 66399 (Deutsche Industrial Norm) levels are specifically designed as a standard within most of Europe as a guide to help organisations make an informed choice.
Level P-1 GENERAL – Low Security
This level of security is generally acceptable for home use. Shred sizes can be up to 12mm. This is useful for general information but not for information that may contain bank account details or passwords etc.
Level P-2 INTERNAL – Low to Medium Security
Shred sizes would be under 6mm which is designed for all internal home or small office information.
Level P-3 CONFIDENTIAL – Medium Security
Level P-3 normally cuts paper into very narrow strips under 2mm or into Cross-Cut Particles (like confetti). This level is recommended under the GDPR as a minimum for all confidential documents including Staff personnel details, Company secrets, sales and marketing plans etc.
Level P-4 SECRET – Medium to High Security
Level P-4 shreds documents into Cross Cut particles of at least 2x15mm. These particles are often referred to as “Micro Cut” This level is recommended for secret documents which may include documents that would jeopardise personal or institutional safety if they were to fall into the wrong hands.
Level P-5 TOP SECRET – High Security
Level P-5 will shred to a maximum Cross Cut particle a size of 0.8 x 12mm. This level is usually implemented in Government/Military installations where documents must be shredded to avoid espionage and where information may undermine State defence.
Level P-6 MAXIMUM – Very High Security
Level P-6 is where particles must not exceed 0.8 x 4mm and it is recognised as being the very high security level available for Government or Military installations.
Level P-7 MAXIMUM – Highest Security
Level P-7 of the Din standard where Cross Cut particles must not exceed ≤5 mm² it is recognised as being the highest security level available for Government or Military installations.
